Description of the film “Dear My Dad”
This video is about documentary photography of my dad’s daily life in different places. The reason why I chose my dad’s life is because he put great effort and passion for his job. The first scene of the newspaper image is the significant point of my project to represent the whole story of the video. Actually, my dad is an architect as well as a constructor. This is because he doesn’t only do paperwork, but he also works physical labor in the construction field for over 20 years. For instance, when he is working with people and doing dangerous work as a constructor, his outfit, nails, and hair always get dirty. Due to this experience, he often apologizes to me and my family for not maintaining his outfit so clean like others. He also felt a bit of shame in his job because of his reputation in the community. He always thought that he should have gotten a businessman like a fancy job, not dangerous work. So, I decided to give him a little gift through this video. I mean, I have never felt any shame or embarrassment regarding what he has done for our family. I am still proud of my dad for supporting me so far. He always believes in me whatever I do. I also know that when my dad is working for others, he looks so happy and joyful. So, I captured every single moment of his daily life with documentary photography. For this video, I have been spending time with my dad for a few weeks, and it was a bit challenging. However, I literally could see his emotional feeling and hardship in the real world. In the end, I made this video to work with the professional presentation-making site which is called Prezi. Since I am making this video with many photographs, Prezi would be a great way to express my dad’s story because zoom-in and out skills are so dynamic.
Transcript of the film “Dear My Dad”
Dear my dad, Mr.Kim. How are you? I am doing great. I heard that many people got in trouble with their life because of the covid-19. I knew that you were also in trouble too. But, you never told my family about what you have been doing at work, how hard it was. So, in this video, I want to tell you how valuable your step and experience is.
Dad, What are you doing at home? It seems you are so busy with planning your future schedule as a planner, studying building design and calculating each size of materials for a meeting at home.
On the way to work. When I sat next to you in the morning, it was so cold and dirty. But you turned on the heater for me, it was getting warm. You seemed so excited with me, you kept talking about some jokes and small talk. When I saw the smog, I was asking you that this would affect air pollution; however, you answered that it was not smog, it is huge moisture from the steel industry.
You also had a habit while driving. You kept checking his schedule constantly.
When I followed your personal storage, I was shocked that there were so many materials and tools that I have never seen before. The storage was so complex to me but you found particular material so fast. I didn’t even know what you were looking for, you found it eventually.
This is your essential belonging in the truck. You are always taking those items everywhere such as screwdrivers, working shoes, shovels, and jackets. I remembered that I was laughing on your jacket because you attached a scotch tape to the hole of the jacket. I asked you why you did that, you said it’s for just temporary repair. After you finished, you went to the laundry right away.
We went to several workplaces together. The place that I remember is called Seosan(서산*Korean name). You were working here as a constructor. At that time, you were working alone and preparing building materials. I was going to take a photo when you work with other people. Unfortunately, the manager in the workplace said only workers could enter this place in order to prevent viruses. So, I wasn’t able to get in there. Because of this reason, I was not sure what you did. However, when I saw further from you, you were so independent and a great leader in the group.
I also remembered this place as well. This place is called Sihueong(시흥*Korean name). You were working here as an adviser and a constructor as well. At that time, you were fixing the factory door. Through controlling the machine, you pointed out technical issues and made conversation with the manager.
In the end, dad, I knew that you consciously were aware of my existence in the workplace. But, it was a great time to explore your field. You seemed to be very happy even though you looked so tired. I do not understand how hard it is waking up in the early morning and getting ready to go out to work. It made me realize how hard you have been working for my family. So, that’s all I have to say. Thank you. I love dad.
