This short documentary was filmed in June 2020 as circuit breaker was easing up and grandparents were allowed to visit their children’s homes. This was originally a re-sit assignment from a documentary module I did in University of Sussex to film a portrait of a person. I had to do a re-sit because I had a problem submitting the various parts of my final assignment online, and it was considered a fail.

For my make-up assignment, I focused on the story of my grandmother coming to visit us to cook mee hoon kueh for my family. It’s a simple dish my grandma often cooks that my siblings and I simply love. To me, it represents my ahma’s kind and selfless spirit.
My grandma is the oldest daughter in her family and stopped her education at P4 to look after her siblings. She raised her four children with much love and care, making sure they enjoyed their childhood despite financial instability and the lack of a father figure. To me, she’s one of the living examples that women are extremely strong and capable people.

My grandma picked up cooking mee hoon kueh from some friends during a visit to some Malaysian relatives’ home. It’s a really simple dish but what makes it special are the hand-torn pieces of dough (and her secret ingredient...olive oil). Marianne and I tried learning from her many times how to tear the dough perfectly so that it’s not too thick and not too small or big. And it amazes us to watch her cook it so easily. Her shallots are fried delicately so that they’re crispy and tasty! When she cooks mee hoon kueh, it’s one of the many ways she shows her love, care and hospitality. And as her grandkids, we receive it almost endlessly.

While I hated having to do the leftover assignment, it made me document someone I love making something I love. I always wish grandmothers can be with us always. My ahma encapsulates quiet strength and beauty to me. And I’m just really thankful I got to capture a ‘mundane’ part of our lives so that I can remember her always.
