A film about the recent exhibition of Lal's photo-series Like by Like as part of Oriel Colwyn's Open Windows season. Like for Like is a long-term personal photographic project, based on Lal's own need to see other brown and Black faces in a largely white population. Lal called it Like for Like to describe a visual sorting mechanism in her brain which derives comfort from putting like things with like, which creates a sense of order, calm and belonging. Like for Like also refers to the social media phrase - in this case, Lal wonders, 'Will you like me if I like me?' which speaks to the lingering sense of non-belonging that can come via the mixed-race experience. In the film, Lal discussed the work with a passerby. However, feeling vulnerable in the street at night with a film camera, she did not discuss the race-related element. This is indicative of the precarious nature of making work about race. Lal shot, edited and post-produced this film of her work, creating an audio-collage soundtrack gathered from the conversations, the street sounds and sounds from some of the locations of the photographs. This was the first time Lal's photography work was exhibited, something extremely meaningful due to it being in Colwyn Bay - the town Lal's grandmother came to from South India as a small child and where she lived for the rest of her life.
