In Lightless, an isolated woman is confronted by strange apparitions and becomes overwhelmed by her own thoughts, which soon begin to colour her existence. Influenced by such films as Parking Chance Film’s Night Fishing (2015) and Maya Deren’s Meshes of the Afternoon (1943), it is a surrealistic exploration of the unseen and the stifling power of the mind as it tumbles into a state of unrest. Deploying dream-like and nightmarish imagery to blur the line between what is “real” and what is the apparent work of the sub-conscious mind, the film seeks to invoke in the audience a sense of confusion and unsettlement, bombarding them with building layers of sound and imagery to create the sensation of drowning in one’s own thoughts. The title refers to the shifting apparitions, perhaps projections of the protagonist’s, and vicariously the audiences mind, which become visible and yet do not reflect light and therefore should not be so. They are the shadows caught out of the corner of your eye, the restless mind left to sit with itself. Lightless thus toys with the idea that these “illusions,” these tricks of the mind, may be more real than we allow ourselves to believe when the mind is distracted and not left to itself. The film features an original score and soundtrack created solely by the film-maker Gaia Mitting, excluding three sounds sourced from the royalty free creative commons resource, freesounds.com.
