Keening is an indigenous practice from different parts of the world (called by different names) that is used for grieving in a very sacred and embodied way.

In Ireland, the practice is called Caoineadh/keening, and was an important part of grieving the dead up until the 1800’s. Professional women (mnàthan-tuirim) would be called upon to perform the keening, sometimes called the funeral cry, which allowed mourning families to grieve more fully, helping to usher the departed into the Otherworld.

To cine/keen means to cry or weep, and is often described as a wail, lament, moan or howl. It was described as having an Otherworldly and unearthly sound, sometimes accompanied by the rhythmic pounding of coffins or pounding of bare earth. This is a truly ancient and sacred way of connecting to primal life force energy that allows grief, pain and trauma to be expressed, witnessed, and released from the body.

This practice is not just for mourning the dead, it can be practiced by anyone who is seeking to grieve and heal the pain that lives inside of them.
