A short film by Didi Lehnhausen about the artist Jos van Merendonk in his studio in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Green calls the shots in van Merendonk's paintings. A powerful, yet introvert colour throws the viewer back onto himself. This green signifies green and questions its sensorial experience, e.g. our memories of the natural world. The art of this conceptual painter is based on a strict set of rules which he has set himself. Within these limitations, everything else is allowed. In concrete terms: at the end of the 1980s van Merendonk chose an elementary drawing from 1983 as template for his art. This drawing looks as if it was made off-hand and features abstract rudiments, such as a knot, and oval and a Z. Following a daily routine, all his paintings now trace back to this figuration. Their écriture, their appearance as figures, is accompanied by variable peinture, different ways of applying paint. Some paintings have restive contrasts, perhaps they address an inner state. In one painting a modern city-scape seems to appear, its lay-out resembling a suburb map. Mark Kremer, 2019
