THREE WOMEN. About slavery and freedom. A FILM BY IDA DOES
'Ida Does has succeeded in packaging something unspeakably horribly in beauty and, despite everything, remaining lenient, advocating recognition, reconciliation and a shared future.' Claire Schut (Joop.nl)
‘This is a moving and often painful documentary, beatifully filmed in a restrained, understated style. Difficult conversations are necessary and Ida Does’ ‘Three Women’ are ensuring they take place’ Bridget Brereton. (Trinidad Express)
For her new documentary 'Three women', director Ida Does filmed 3 women who are involved in the heritage of slavery. Valika Smeulders (heritage expert), Marian Markelo (winti priestess ) and Ellen-Rose Kambel (researcher). Valika Smeulders organizes walks in the historic city center of The Hague. She regularly makes new discoveries about personal stories that took place behind those facades. Marian Markelo in the intimacy of her temple at home, talks about the deep roots and principles of the winti culture. Winti connects the descendants of the enslaved in Suriname with the culture and traditions of their African ancestors. And then there is Ellen-Rose Kambe who discovered a picture of the man who owned her ancestors in slavery. That first shock of 'proximity' is the starting signal for her to dig deeper. Kambel starts a conversation with descendants of the slave owner from Sassenheim. How do they view the history of slavery? In 'Three Women' the main characters, each in their own way, advocate a worthy acknowledgment of Dutch slavery. 'Three Women' is a cinematic plea for this recognition. Three different stories come together in the big colonial story of The Netherlands. A story that is often denied or untold.
