‘Imposed Piece’ is a documentary film about the final of the Queen Elisabeth Competition for violin in 2015. Throughout this cinematographic chronicle, the audience meets some of the twelve finalists and follows their intense preparation during this extraordinarily prestigious, musical competition.
These young and talented musicians finally have the chance to manifest themselves as soloists after years of preparation and sacrifices.
The pressure and the expectations are high.
In complete seclusion and during a time period of a mere eight days, they have to study a compulsory piece and a concerto of their choice.
In this film, we follow the progress and the difficulties some candidates run into while studying this compulsory work. Little by little, we reveal how they prepare, how they learn to cope with the pressure and how they reflect on music, the competition, their past, but also their future.
The candidates’ journey ends at Bozar, where they’ll perform the two pieces, accompanied by Belgium’s National Orchestra conducted by Marin Alsop, in front of the audience and international jury. Ultimately, the film ends with the notorious and intensely dramatic proclamation.
