As film spectators we take a seat and enjoy the show, immersed into the cinematic apparatus. Once the lights go down and the projector is running we lose sight of our reality to step into a manufactured world. Contemporary movie goers are susceptible to this understanding and accept that film directors might expect us to think of their films as real. Olivier Assayas’ Irma Vep (1996) tramples on conceptions of realism to further explore the tactility of filmic images. Obsessively, the film incorporates images abstractly by using archival film footage, video clips, and the film-within-a-film. These clips effectively merge with the film at large to erode the artifice that is realism.
