Short city symphany made for class at Feirstein Grad School of Cinema.
In class we saw "A Bronx Morning" (1931) and someone commented about the kind of "struggle" on display as depicted by Jay Leyda, the film's creator. Because to speak of a struggle is to speak from a higher place, similar to the sentiment of pity. Those on display in Leyda's film are in not in a dire state, the film is not a poster asking for donation to save the Bronx; they are simply existing in the moment of their lives. More so, this comment got me heated to absolve the Bronx of any naysaying people may have. To be the champion of this borough that is near non-existent in the canon of mainstream visual media. Yet the off chance the Bronx is represented, it is in association to being a very far place or a very scary place. Both of these statements are not true by way of the subway.
The double-edged sword that is the MTA creates both the accessibility of travel to most places in New York City but at the cost of having an endless crusade against homeless people and people of color. It is an incredible accomplishment of engineering to create underground tubes for mass transport that can run through all hours of the day. I'd argue that this wonderful project be accessible to all people with the desire to move, it is the humanitarian thing to do.
With this in mind, I hope to capture the joy of traversal through commercial project of the MTA. As well the privilege of sight I am able to give to the exciting normalcy of the Bronx, a place I am proud to say I live.
