We were tasked by one of our university lecturers to create a film in the Dogme 95 style - hand held camera, sound not separate from the images, etc. As director I had the idea to create a truly random movie, in which events were decided by the flipping of the main character's coin. All coin tosses and their consequences in this film are real. Even when I get punched in the face; while we wanted to give off the impression that the character was beginning to cheat, in actual fact Jake Brett (our actor) rolled a heads twice - so I was always destined for that punch. The randomness of the filmmaking process allowed for improvisation and therefore the democracy inherent in Dogme 95 - while I directed, we all as a group influenced the story and decided it should end with the character's descent into suicide. Like any rushed film mistakes are rampant, but I hope they add to the sense of authenticity - interestingly, the reason Jake is smiling at the end while he is supposed to be suicidal, is because he rolled six heads in a row - heads, of course, meaning "jump".
