My online video ‘How to Freeze Time’ builds upon the concepts proposed within my audio slideshow ‘’Freeze Frames’ in which I aimed to champion the power of the camera in maintaining and recording a level of history for humanity.
‘How to Freeze Time’ tells the story of a young man, who receives an intergenerational birthday present of a film camera from his parents. This camera was utilised by his grandparents and parents to record significant life moments within photographs. Initially, he discards its relevance, claiming he can use his phone to take pictures. However, upon further practice, taking pictures with his father and developing his first roll of film, he uncovers new family memories.

The film roll, which returns with previously undeveloped images from his grandparents and parents’ time, allows the young man to discover a newfound appreciation for the art of photography. Visiting landmarks where such old family photos were taken, including images of the Sydney Harbour Bridge’s construction, the 2000 Sydney Olympics and a previous cityscape of Barangaroo, his love for photography begins to blossom. The video thus ends with the boy beginning to take his own photos for memory, whilst recognising that history and the images that record such events, are all around him, metaphorically allowing him to ‘freeze time’.
