HOUSE ON FIRE Docu-series is a 4 part, short docu-series by directors Heather Hawksford and Reed Harkness, produced for Topic.com.

A MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTORS:

We created this series out of a desire to find common ground in polarized times.There is so much divide. Social and mass media seems to amplify this, one sensational image or article after another. By asking communities this simple question about what they would save during a house fire, we see how surprisingly similar we are to one another, despite our perceived differences.⠀

We went into four different communities in Oregon with the same prompt. Your house is on fire and you have 2 minutes to save just one item. We wanted to understand what is truly valuable for people when it comes down to a urgent “this is your only chance” moment and how those values were similar or different for each of these communities. As we filmed this, we were taken by the humanity revealed by all.

Ep 1 - HAPPY VALLEY is a storybook, upper middle class suburb known for sprawling new housing developments, good schools and low crime. Here residents reflect on the importance of maintaining a sense of safety through property and material possessions.

Ep 2 - DIGNITY VILLAGE & KENTON WOMEN’S VILLAGE are self-run communities for previously homeless people. Being homeless has given these residents a uniquely profound perspective on material possessions.

Ep 3 - WOODBURN is an agricultural town with a large Latinx population. In this episode, residents choose items that tell stories of immigration and community through simple objects that draw connections to the past.

Ep 4 - THE GORGE. The homes within Oregon’s Columbia River Gorge scenic area were narrowly saved from a major forest fire in 2017. This episode explores how almost losing everything changes one’s relationship to property and possessions.
