In the making of this short film project I wanted to share what images, thoughts and feelings the word “bright” evoked for me. Through overlaying a montage of short clips shot over the holiday and adding music created by myself and a friend, I hope to have created a short, uplifting, thought-provoking film montage. My idea was to explore what other people think of, when asked to consider the word “bright”, possibly happiness, intense light or intelligence and then create a moving short film. For me, the word “bright” brings up thoughts and feelings around hope and new beginnings.

In the images of my dog, Daisy, I tried to evoke a feeling of connection and hope. When I shot the clips, I though she looked so sad, like a stray dog with no owner or home, and then she has a change in life and finds a home and loved ones, like hope has returned to her life.

Having gathered my friends for their contributions, I was further inspired, and I knew that their contribution was going to enrich my film and give it more depth. I knew what clips I wanted to capture, and as my mother has a creative background. We sat down together, and I run my plans for my film past her. This was a useful process as it allowed me to verbalise my thoughts and plans and listen to another person’s perspective on what I could do to make it better. I find it useful to consult with others at times, whether to utilise elements of what they have said or not, it can help. I knew that I wanted to capture the setting sun as it dipped below the horizon, sending sunlight through the landscape. I also wanted to capture scenes from the annual Hogmanay bonfire that happens in my town every New Year’s Eve where everyone comes together to start the new year.

I asked my musical friend if he could write a short piece of piano music that I could incorporate with this film, I have watched his band grow and develop over the past two years and I wanted to utilise his skills. He is such an inspiration, I felt only he would be able to write something that would work well with this piece. His willingness to create a short piece for my film, consolidated the joy and hope that friendship helps to keep alive.
