The Dating Game had to go through many changes from script to screen due to limitations caused by Covid-19. I completed all the scenes possible at the time but had to change the lead actress due to unavailability. I was unable to complete the zoom scenes which were in the script as i could not get the required amount of actors due to covid, i instead worked around this and changed the direction of the film to be leading up to the dating game on zoom to be a little more comedic as the main dramatic points had been cut. The film also had the limitation of only being filmed indoors at my house.

The original script for The Dating Game included things which I had to unfortunately cut due to limitations, such as a real cat and more actors to perform the game show section. To work around this i replaced the cat with a toy dog to add some comedy and instead of featuring the game show, it is instead about the main character leading up to it and getting prepared for it. Throughout the film, the view can clearly see that the toy dog is always moving around without anyone picking it up and i made this as a creative decision as i wanted something that the main character would talk to so that the film isn't without dialogue and i also wanted to make the view think how the dog is moving.

The main actor was very cooperative on set and was eager to discuss how to do certain movements and what to do in each scene to get it right. This was very helpful and made the whole production alot easier to complete.

It was just myself as the director and the main actor on set which helped keep the focus on the filming and also prompted discussions between us about some details in the script and the directions that the actor should take during each shot, which helped create a positive and open environment on set. This even went as far as one shot even being fully improvised which helped add some comedic effects to the film.

The directing style I was attempting to recreate was japanese new wave as this style focuses on editing and composition techniques and i was interested in making my project with these subjects in mind. I did not want to have normal composition for my film and aimed to have some unique shots of my own, one of which is a shot following the actor from behind which i had not done before and some other shots which were focusing on the mirror instead of the actor.

In the post production, i also wanted to include some personal touches such as at the beginning of the film it is in black and white and then changes to colour as the tv fills out and the camera begins to move to focus on the actor which is a little easter egg to my previous project (Visual Narrative Film) as the plot of that film is about colour. I also had to work around the limited shots I had completed, in which I added in a cutaway shot telling the viewer that some time has passed in between two shots.

Overall, the experience of filming during a pandemic was stressful during pre production due to what we could and couldn't do, but once that was out the way and we got onto the production and post-production it was a lot more fun and enjoyable, being on set and filming was great and was something I thoroughly enjoyed.
