In my Senior Thesis film flate, I explore themes of transformation and objectification through the lenses of body image, heteronormativity, and homosexuality. It is essentially an experimental self-portrait piece focused heavily on my own queer identity, and the external and internal perceptions that impact that sense of identity. Through audio-visual poetry, flate brings light to issues I have faced. The film explores the dangers of heteronormative behavior within our society, and transversely, how even within queer spaces queer people are actively objectified. Additionally, this film analyzes the idea of objectification as related to body image, the commodification of thinness, and the demoralization of people who don’t fit that standard. All of these themes and issues are deeply interwoven into my own experience of understanding identity.
