Dans le Cauchemar is heavily inspired by the surrealist montages and dreamy visions created by Maya Deren in her short film Meshes of the Afternoon (1943), as the film creates confusion and an alternate, dream-reality through looping timelines and symbolic imagery. The soft footage and unique angles of Parking Chance Film's Night Fishing (2015) also play into the inspiration for the experimental film, as well as the demanding questions of what makes up a nightmare? How can they be defined, and what sets them apart from our dreams to which we so readily fall in to? What makes people fear nightmares? Inspired by these elements and questions, Dans le Cauchemar delves into the dark possibilities hidden within the subconscious mind. Through sequences of coloured lighting, deep shadows and overlayed images, this experimental film explores the nightmarish landscapes the human mind can conjure whilst unconscious, whilst simultaneously diving into the essence of a surrealist dreamscape. Absurd images and occurrences within dreams are unquestionably accepted as reality once an individual is within their dream, and Dans le Cauchemar explores this blind acceptance of an alternate reality by focusing on the darker images the mind creates whilst trapped in a nightmare; how these images do not simply spring into existence from nothing, but are symbolic reflections of our waking lives and our understanding of the world. An experimental film of dark juxtapositions, Dans le Cauchemar captures our every day and projects it into a nonsensical landscape of dark imagery, harsh lighting, and shadows.
