DAY 1255. Perhaps you, too, have been experiencing an extraordinarily wide spectrum of thoughts and emotions about the state of the world. I’ve found myself suspended in a swirling vortex of contrasting perspective, barely able to know how I really feel about anything, but also feeling okay about that not knowing. I said to a couple friends the other day, “I’m feeling settled in the unsettled-ness of the unknown.”
Recently I’ve been recalling a certain feeling I’ve had many times, especially as a child, while in the midst of illness, sick in bed for days with whatever virus— of the regular kind— was going around. I’d begin to question whether or not I’d ever be well again. The declaration at that point in my thinking would be: “Oh, if only I were well again so that I could go out into the world and run and smile and feel at ease— I will cherish the day! I will not take my wellness for granted!”
This sentiment mimics how I feel now, in part at least. In a very pronounced way, a part of me wonders if the world will ever return to the way it was, and truly I do feel that once I have the opportunity to “go out into the world,” I will do so with a higher platform of intention. Or at least I hope so.
However, I cannot say I want it all to go back to the way it was before. There is a wish in my heart, a longing that has been tugging at me indefatigably and long before this virus became a pandemic, that things will be different.
When we step out again into the world of places and gathering in the flesh, may we do so carrying what we have gained during this time. May we take care with the people in our lives, be present to them, and really listen. May we truly see, honor, and cultivate what matters most in life— which is outrageously simple apart from the necessities of food, water, shelter. May we take time to rest the body and the mind and may we realize that a constant influx of information does not necessarily make us smarter nor more connected. And may we make the space to envision how it is we’d like to be in the world, no matter what state we find it to be.
