Cycles are an integral part of human life. A rotation that begins at the same place it ends, while moving forward in time and space.

There is an innate rhythm that accompanies anything with a cycle. A journey that begins at the same place it ends, while moving forward in time and space. Cycles permeate every part of human life and take many forms. The waking hours of a person is determined by the day/night cycle where light is given and taken away, along with our state of consciousness. Each day marks a milestone in the earth’s orbit around the sun, yet another cycle whereby seasons are determined, collectively impacting the entire population. Focusing in, one of man’s revolutionary inventions was the wheel which utilises the rotation of a circular object. These repeated cycles are what allow humanity to move heavy objects with little friction, or travel at superhuman speeds and is hence a cornerstone of modern civilisation. This film centres around the connection between humanity and these cycles. It’s told through the lens of the human mind’s stream of consciousness while in a dream-like state, whereby numerous observations visually overlap each other. This not only depicts the dreaming mind but symbolises the interconnected nature in which these cycles exist and how they ultimately dictate a section of the human experience. Moreover, the psychedelic aesthetic encourages the viewer to ask why these cycles exist, why there must be a logical order to things when chaos can so easily take hold. Stylistically, this piece is influenced by the works of Ryan Fox, Gaspar Noé and Scott Portingdale, with their exploration of vibrant colour in a circular array informing the surrealist aesthetic qualities of Cycle. Moreover, its observational nature acquires inspiration from the constructivist movement, in particular “The Man With a Movie Camera” which pioneered this approach.
