NFTs (Non Fungible Tokens) are, without much doubt, the buzz concept of 2021 within the art community. Redefining traditional selling of artworks, challenging curation and art collecting, it shook and divided the creative industry. With this panel discussion we tried to understand better the novelty of crypto art and NFTs and grasp the challenges.

But what is an NFT? Really: anything digital (drawings, music, a tweet, your brain downloaded and turned into an AI…). A lot of the current excitement however happens around using the tech to sell digital art. At a very high level, most NFTs are part of the Ethereum blockchain. Ethereum is a cryptocurrency, like bitcoin or dogecoin, but its blockchain also supports these NFTs, which store extra information that makes them work differently from, say, an ETH coin.

In this episode of Playgrounds TV, director Leon van Rooij talked to film-journalist Dana Linssen, founder and managing director of Nxt Museum Merel van Helsdingen, and visual artists Nick DenBoer and Rizon Parein about this new development. They covered their own positioning with respect to NFTs, discussed the lack of tangibility they bring, the rush and over-hype but also their potential to make the art-world more inclusive.
