A neighborhood drive-in theatre was installed in a public school parking lot across the street from Barbara T. Smith’s home. The screen was of the kind seen in small towns as viewed at a distance from the highway. Convertibles were rented and arranged as the seating area. A checkpoint traffic controller, a hostess and a maitre d’ dressed in uniforms with gloves, hats and red-coned flashlights directed incoming patrons. After parking their own cars people were seated in one of the many colorful convertibles. Servers brought drive-in style trays of food from the kitchen and placed them on the car windows. The dejeuner sur la route included pan bagnat, tartine au jambon, radis, cornichon, water and a vin de table . The service was menu as opposed to a la carte.

As people ate, Richard Newton’s film “Some Poets,” complete with cartoon introduction was projected. A child played on the swing at the drive-in’s playground. People in the neighborhood came by to watch from the drive-in’s park. Some drunkenness was noted, but overall the crowds weren’t unruly. There were ten shows in two nights; all oversold at an admission price of 30 dollars per carload, including the food, drink, and films.
