A one hour drive in 2011 or so. My old friend DOP Walter Lassally tells me about his life. Going from his birthplace (Berlin-Schöneberg) westwards for the duration of a radio feature - in public transport, the S-Bahn circle around Berlin. We only made it until his time and work in Greece - part 2 was planned but never made. I recently found this interview and thought it is precious. Important here is the sound - only a few pics illustrate the narration. Walter was one of the best b/w cameramen ever. He only wanted to do one thing: make films. Women took advantage of this eternal golden boy. Until the very end. But this is another story, not for the public. The respective person knows. Walter always was in best mood though he once told me: "I always expect the worst. Then it only can get better." His dad managed to escape with his wife and son after having been tortured and confined in KZ Sachsenhausen. Walter became a worldwide traveller - a truly itinerant cameraman. He loved animals a lot and supported the local rescue in Chania/Crete. He also was a huge believer in the power of numbers. For long he practised the I Ching (The Book of Changes) and I somewhere must have a book he once gave me. Walter travelled until the very last year of his life. In the end he only got help by two of his friends on Crete to whom I want to say TY with this. Walter, I miss you, I miss your advice and also our funny and often pretty controversial discussions about the making of films. Rest in universe, my good old friend. Life is nothing but changes.
