For psychological horror Censor (2021), we created a transformative installation from fifty metres of loosely coiled piano wire, spun into an amorphous shape. A transducer was attached to one end of the wire, allowing us to send audio through the sculpture, causing it to resonate. Contact mics and geophones (which are a special type of contact mic designed to pick up the very low frequencies of the Earth) were placed at different points along the wire’s path, recapturing the sounds at different stages of the transformative journey, The process of transferring the sonic qualities of the sculpture to the film’s source material generated a library of new elements with an unusual new aesthetic. These could then be edited and layered into atmospheres and textures to evoke the surreality of dream and memory.
