Shot over the course of seven evenings, Caulfield into night is a homage to Caulfield Park. The park, like hundreds of others around Melbourne, has become a sanctuary for those in the area in times of lockdown.
Friends walk, children play, dogs tussle. For one hour each day, Caulfield Park becomes a tranquil oasis.
Yet, despite it’s beauty and vitality, the park is coming to represent something more sinister. The gravel track, once a path of liberation, grows ever more claustrophobic each day. The only sin it has committed is its familiarity, but that doesn’t help to alleviate a growing sense of entrapment in a place that once felt like a refuge.
My film attempts to mirror this split personality the park has taken on. At once beautiful and yet somehow oppressive.
The format of the film will be one slow, monotonous pan taking in the park and the surrounding houses. The film will start at golden hour, highlighting the idyllic beauty of the park and the people within. As the sun sets, the film will descend into darkness, with the golden light being replaced by the deep blue of the night.
The film will rely predominately on aural cues to create the growing sense of claustrophobia. Hundreds of sounds have been collected for the project and will be progressively layered to create a near overwhelming cacophony by the end of the film.
