The Casa Blanca is a cultural center created in 2016 in the colonial city of Arequipa, with the aim to promote art and culture in the southern part of Peru. With a curatorial line oriented towards photography and cinema, the center welcomes numerous national and international exhibitions, workshops, festivals, roundtables and screenings all year long. « We are trying to bring contemporary art from all over the world here in Arequipa. We need art and culture here in Arequipa, there are not many cultural places, there are not many spaces, and less for photographers, so we imagined this project » explains Conrado Aguilar, director of Casa Blanca.
In order to do so, they doted the space with a residency program for national and international photographers and film-makers, and provide them with accommodation, a black and white laboratory, a lighting studio, and some national curators to help them develop their project on site. In addition, with a gallery space into the institute and one to come directly on the street, the artists in residence will have the opportunity to exhibit their investigation and share it with the Peruvian public at the end of their stay.
The Casa Blanca has become an institution of references for emerging artists that wish to explore the rich cultural heritage of Peru, and share their perception of it with the inhabitant of this ancestral country. « Arequipa is also the « City of Light », we have light all year round and photographers look for light, also the architecture, our culture, our countryside, this is not observed anywhere in Peru. So, here in Arequipa, it seems to me that it is fundamental to have artistic residencies so that people come and that this sharing is generated » adds Conrado Aguilar.

La Casa Blanca es un centro cultural creado en 2016 en la ciudad colonial de Arequipa, con el objetivo de promover el arte y la cultura en la parte sur del Perú. Con una línea curatorial orientada hacia la fotografía y el cine, el centro acoge numerosas exposiciones nacionales e internacionales, talleres, festivales, mesas redondas y proyecciones durante todo el año. « Estamos tratando de traer arte contemporáneo de todas partes del mundo aquí en Arequipa. Necesitamos arte y cultura aquí en Arequipa, no hay muchos lugares culturales, no hay muchos espacios, y menos para fotógrafos, entonces ideamos este proyecto » explica Conrado Aguilar, director de la Casa Blanca.
Para cumplir con este sueño, dotaron el espacio con un programa de residencias para fotógrafos y cineastas nacionales e internacionales, y les brindaron alojamiento, un laboratorio blanco y negro, un estudio de iluminación y algunos curadores nacionales para ayudarlos a desarrollar su proyecto in situ. Además, con una galería en el instituto y una para venir directamente a la calle, los artistas residentes tendrán la oportunidad de exponer su investigación y compartirla con el público peruano al final de su estadía.
La Casa Blanca se ha convertido en una institución de referencia para artistas emergentes que desean explorar el rico patrimonio cultural del Perú y compartir su percepción con los habitante de este país ancestral. « Ademas Arequipa es la « Ciudad de la Luz », tenemos luz todo el año y los fotógrafos buscan luz, también la arquitectura, nuestra cultura, nuestra campiña, esto no se observa en todas partes de Perú. Entonces, aquí en Arequipa, me parece que es fundamental tener residencias artísticas para que gente venga y que se genera esto de compartir », agrega Conrado Aguilar.
