Butt's was the American Command Post in the Battle of Rhode Island, covering their strategic retreat from the British forces during the American Revolutionary War. An important setpiece, the earthworks fort is situated atop Butt's Hill (also referred to as Windmill Hill) strategically located between East and West Main roads and on the highest point of the northern tip of Aquidneck Island.
