After the 1978 release of Parallel Lines by Blondie, the band's third most famous hit, "One Way Or Another," which had previously been a very popular deep track off the album, was released as a single in 1979. Blondie's second hit, "Sunday Girl," rocketed to #1 in the UK for three weeks in May 1979, but failed to be released as a single in the United States. Supposedly, "One Way Or Another" was inspired by one of Harry's ex-boyfriends who stalked her after their breakup. The song was released in early June 1979 and peaked in Canada at #7 and in the US at #24 on Billboard and #22 on Cash Box on August 4, 1979. This live performance is from a 1979 episode of Midnight Special, which I have synchronized to the album track. This was also quite difficult as Debbie Harry varied the scansion of her vocal in places, requiring fragmenting parts of the film clip and adjusting for speed.
Debbie also looks quite stunning and sexually alluring in this performance and it is a joy indeed to watch her perform. It is sad to say that it has taken another generation for most of us to realize that the band's lead vocalist, Debbie Harry, was the most beautiful, the most glamorous, and the most sexy female star the entertainment world has ever known. If not for her love of folk and rock music toward which her career ultimately gravitated, she might have ended up the world's most famous supermodel, eclipsing even the likes of Gia. Debbie Harry was not just another pretty face in the music industry; she had worked as a model and also as a Playboy bunny. Today, lead female vocalists like Little Boots are emulating her seductive allure, with a biopic of Deborah Harry in the works to be portrayed by actress Malin Akerman. This song, like "Heart Of Glass," is an important part of rock music history, of the end of one decade and the start of another, the transition of punk to a more elegant new wave, the dawning of 80's chic, and the growing trend known as Euro Pop, up until that time led largely by the rock group Abba.
