I spent a year at KCET learning how to dig through archives to build a story. After that stint I went back to grad school at the UCLA film school and started to put what I'd learned into practice on my stories. One of the things I'd found was that we'd lost track of over 100 sites where we'd dumped nuclear waste into the ocean. This finding shocked the EPA, that was being tasked with supporting the Reagan administrations desires to renew the dumping of nuclear waste. My research put a spanner in their desire to start dumping in the Mariana Trench. Congressman John Burton, held hearings and journalists like Bettina Gregory started to jump on aspects of the story. We had to get the underwater footage to her in New York. My friend at ABC in LA, Susan Cope got us up on the satellite feed and we made the deadline. The Congressional hearings revolved around the government saying dumping was safe and other saying, if we don't know what happened in the past how can you be sure it's be safe in the future. They won the argument and the resumption of the ocean disposal of nuclear waste was stopped in this country. This decision triggered the London Dumping Convention to outlaw dumping globally.
As I.F. Stone found out, there's gold in them thar public records.
