The film is a neo-surrealist piece. It tells a fortuitous encounter of a young man before his marriage proposal. The protagonist prepares for his proposal in a public restroom of a hotel. After making sure no one is using the restroom, he locks the door and starts to rehearse. A flushing sound suddenly interrupts his rehearsal, and a middle-aged man walks out of one of the toilet cubicles. Then he tries to open a weird small talk about the wedding ring, which makes protagonist suspicious of his motives. I did not give any hint or explanation about who the middle-aged man may be, how he possibly got in there, and what his purpose exactly is. I left the film with an ambiguous open ending on purpose to arouse curiosity and motivate the audience to think about the answers. In fact, it is impossible for the middle-aged man to suddenly appear out of thin air, since the young man has checked the entire room, and made sure there was no on in there. Thus, he should be an imaginary character created by protagonist’s subconscious mind and means to test his own determination. Similarly the edge between reality and subconscious world is patently blurry in the film, or there is even no boundaries between them. The reason why the confusions have arisen is because of a persistent cognition constructed by the everyday experience, and the thoughts and senses perceived from the material world. People artificially split their awareness into different segments such as subject vs. object, inside vs. outside, or instinct vs. reasonable. By that means, they automatically draw a mental line across the conscious and subconscious mind in order to survive in the real world. People normally refuse and even are afraid of applying intuition and subconscious mind in daily life. Otherwise, they would be considered as a psychopath or a pipe dreamer. On the contrary, I have been trying to release their potential – the divine powers – in the cinematic world that I call it “neo-surrealist cinema”.
