Continuing the theme in my P1: Certainty from the Waveform of a Sound vs Uncertainty from the Source of a Sound; in my P2, I explore the possible coexistence between careful controlled acoustics and natural white noises. The interesting contrast between the two drastically different elements allow a fascinating program of a recording studio.

The design proposal locates at the Signal Hill Garden in Tsim Sha Tsui, Hong Kong. It is a natural elevated platform on the peak, facing the harbor, serving as a public garden, an escape from the hectic concrete jungle of TST commercial area. In order to preserve the original appearance of the greenery, the building is embedded within the hill. A series of unique spaces are then designed to serve different purposes: a flat open peak with a cafe, multiple lookout areas for the sea view, multiple creative jamming spaces for musicians to collaborate in, a splendid pool atrium connecting all floors, an underwater monitor space packed with four immersive speakers, a mysterious ‘Cave’ to embrace the raw terrain, a cozy lounge for relaxation, a professional recording studio plus two extra isolation booths, and a hydraulic elevator for loading of instruments.

The skin of the building is a layer of copper cladding. Copper can shield radio frequencies, effectively isolating the recording equipments from any possible interference. Copper also changes its appearance through time (from shiny gold to matte brown to green patina), which aspect resonates with the fundamental of music- to transcend through time.

On the other hand, the kinetic facade is made up of a tessellation of motorized copper flakes that magically respond to the soundscape of the interior acoustics environment. Such system creates a visual representation for abstract sound, highlighting the contrast between Certainty of a Controlled Environment vs Uncertainty of Nature.
