During the spring semester of 1972, a group of Baltimore Friend School students, led by the extraordinary History teacher Martita Goshen, visited Gettysburg National Military Park. All but one were 11th-graders at the time. This video is a digital conversion made almost 50 years later in Brooklyn, NY from less than three minutes of Kodachrome Super 8 movie film shot during the trip by one of the students, Walter K. Lew. No frames were rearranged or deleted except for a completely blanched-out scene at the beginning and a personally embarrassing moment at the end. The song, "Fire and Rain," written and performed by James Taylor, was recorded from RHINO's YouTube channel, which retains all copyright.

The quality of much of the imagery is weak since it was probably the first footage ever shot by the student and sat neglected for half a century. The camera had a flawed lens and no light adaptation or tripod. It nevertheless manages to capture a few sweet moments of a bunch of teenagers who seem happier and more amiable than is usually recalled. -- WKL
