My short film is based off of the song ‘Babooshka’ by Kate Bush. First, I picked apart the lyrics to try and understand the story she was trying to convey as best I could. From then, I took my own interpretation of the text and wrote a poem which I then used as narration for this short film. In the film, a toxic relationship is worsened by the fact that the wife fears her husband has cheated on her or is going to, so she sends him a letter under the alias ‘Babooshka’ to test his faithfulness. After several letters have been exchanged between the two and they become more acquainted, she decides to ask him to meet up with her; the ultimate test of his faithfulness. They meet and the wife is disguised as Babooshka. The husband finds Babooshka far more desirable than his wife and so declares his undying love for her. The wife is conflicted emotionally by this response but soon comes to the realisation that she doesn’t have to be Babooshka to be beautiful. She divorces her husband and as a result, feels free and liberated. The theme of bright is shown through the contrast in the wife’s character in the beginning and in the end. In the beginning, she is in an unhealthy relationship with her husband and is plagued by insecurity and paranoia. This is signified by the dark colour scheme and the use of black and white in the flashbacks of the wife at home, insecure about herself. In the end, however, she comes to her senses and realises that she doesn’t need her husband to feel beautiful and validated, she just needs to love herself. The contrast in lighting emphasizes this. For example, in the scene with the streetlamp, there is artificial light, mirroring her artificiality at this time as she is pretending to be someone else, this being the only way she can feel desirable. This contrasts with the final scene as the lighting is all natural, showing that she is finally comfortable in her own skin and feels beautiful without pretending to be anyone else, exemplified when she drops the scarf, therefore leaving behind all remnants of Babooshka to be blown away in the wind. I carried out all production roles except acting. The name of the actor in my film is Ariadne Marek.
