Time exists, in its purest form, only in our minds, which allow us to expand and contract its fluid existence, often involuntarily.
Time is a concept that is very familiar for us as humans, yet distant from our complete understanding. Ironically, time itself only exists in our consciousness, as it is not a physical object but an idea created by us, instilled into our cultures. While there are physical objects that come to mind when referring to time, they are only a way of expressing this intangible concept for accessible use in our daily lives.
Very often people remark “how the days fly by” but also tend to point out how certain activities “seem to take an eternity”. Atemporal explores this perceived ability of the human mind to expand the duration of the unenjoyable and every-day while also condense the overall time in our lives.
Heavily inspired by the juxtaposition of metropolitan time-lapses and slow-motion nature in Koyaanisqatsi (Reggio, 1982) as well as the ethereal sensations of Sleep Has Her House (Barley, 2017), Atemporal utilises a metric montage technique to establish a rhythm of alternating fast-moving clouds and excruciatingly slow mundane moments of waiting, accentuated by the film’s contrasting colour palette of warm and cool tones to communicate excitement and slowness respectively.
Accompanying these visuals is a sweeping soundscape produced by the manipulated pitches of household sounds, which elicit a sense of mysticality to these otherwise ordinary tones. Additionally, the manufactured nature of these items highlights their intertwinement with time as a human construct. Atemporal captures the extremes of our subconscious ability to shape time, enabling us to reflect on our fleeting existence and cosmic insignificance.
