Explain how your remix uses pre-existing content and reclaims it for new meaning
For my remix video, I primarily used old educational videos and reformatted them to provide a portrait of the process of severe anxiety. The audio implements distorted versions of sounds that are often triggering for me. I wanted to illustrate the disparity between the visual hyper awareness and internal/auditory overstimulation of my anxiety. The re-purposed videos serve as an illustration of this intense focus: the progression from fruit to insect to bacteria, and back out again. I used this footage to provide a “zooming” effect; often with my anxiety I feel that I am intensely focused and aware of everything around me, even when I don’t want to be. I centered on orange fruit imagery because oranges are something (oddly) that I love and calm me — I repurposed this footage for the purpose of displaying the omnipresence of anxiety and mental illness, regardless of how joyful or calming an experience/thing may be. This is why the video is interspersed with footage from a documentary about reproduction — the internal organ footage — and an educational film about surviving atomic attacks. I used this footage to illustrate the unavoidable immersion and trauma of anxiety. The audio is disparate in content from the video yet rhythmic in order to display the disconnect between visual hyper awareness and sensory overstimulation. I also implemented this disconnect to illustrate outward vs internal appearance (or lack thereof) of mental illness.
Identify at least one problem you see in your final work.
Visually, I struggle with the length of some clips in relation to the cohesion of the film. I think that some of the hand+orange clips and a few of the bomb-safety clips that intersperse other video lack rhythm in a way that feels overly-disjointed. I also have difficulty with some of the audio levels in their effectiveness in conveying an overwhelming/jarring sensory experience. I also think that some of the audio/video transitions come off as unclean/amateur.
Identify at least one success you see in your final work
I am very happy with the keying editing that appears in the remix. I am especially pleased with the bug-to-bacteria transition. I am also proud of the use of rhythm in my sound and editing, as I feel that it added to the cohesion of the final piece.
