Adam Sébire: AnthropoScenes • Galleri Svalbard • March/April 2020 • Opening 8 March 18:00

Like water, wind or earthquake, humans have unwittingly become a geological force in their own right: this is the premise of "the Anthropocene". Our economic-industrial systems disrupt the Earth Systems on which Life itself depends. These processes we set in motion are so vast as to be almost imperceptible to our own eyes; we're trapped within them, looking out. Meanwhile our pollutants show little regard for national boundaries, so their effects become displaced from their causes, in both time and space.

Might visual art offer us a point of entry to perceive these unprecedented changes; to see them from another perspective?

For its 25th anniversary exhibition in March-April 2020 Galleri Svalbard presents an all-moving image exhibition drawn from Adam's ongoing series of AnthropoScenes, filmed in Iceland, Greenland and now Svalbard.

Adam Sébire studied documentary filmmaking at the national film schools of Australia & Cuba before before making programs for the Australian public broadcasters ABC & SBS. His experiences while filming on the Pacific island nation of Tuvalu in 2003, only 2m above the rising waters of the Pacific, turned his work towards climate change.

As artist, filmmaker & photographer Adam’s works have been shown widely, from international film festivals to global TV broadcasts; from Australia’s Flying Doctor visitors centre to the Deutsches Museum Munich and the United Nations headquarters in New York.

In 2014 Adam and his filmmaker sister co-founded the Vertical Film Festival, the first worldwide competition for portrait-format film & video (ongoing). He has lectured on the history of vertical and multi-panel art for the University of Sydney and for Facebook/Instagram employees globally, while taking far too long to complete his PhD on the visual representation of climate change.
