More about the movie
Tech & Story
With this short film, Reggie challenged himself to shoot the whole project with 1 camera and a single 50mm lens. Reggie’s favorite focal lengths are 28mm, 50mm, and 85mm. Choosing to shoot in a 1:85:1 ratio, Reggie decided the 50mm would be best to tell the visual story he had in his mind.
He chose to shoot this short film in B&W because he wanted it to have an ol’skool feel even though it was being shot with modern day technology. In order to give it more of an ol’skool aesthetics, he used a net on the front of the lens to bloom the highlights and soften the details. He tried to stick to using natural light as much as possible, and imploring strong backlight when needed. Also, in this story he wanted the audience to have somewhat of a Voyeur point of view, like they’re seeing something that they shouldn’t see, so he decided to go handheld and hide behind walls and doors for certain shots.

Public Perception
This movie was written and shot knowing that it could cause shock value to some viewers and maybe certain activist. There were a lot of conversations about the possible controversy that this film could and/or would receive. Reggie A Brown is a huge fan of the works from directors like Lars Von Trier, Darren Aronofsky, Ari Aster, Quentin Tarantino, and Nicolas Pesce to name a few. Knowing how these directors tell the story that they want to tell, the stories they themselves enjoy, and the stories that some audience member would consider “too much”, Reggie followed suite and told the story he wanted to tell without trying to make everyone comfortable. Actually, his goal was to make people very uncomfortable. During the conversations about the film, Reggie said, “People may not agree with it. People might say, ‘you have to be a sick person think of something like that.’ Which I am. But to those people I would say, Tupac made a song named Brenda’s Got A Baby, and in this song he talks about a young woman having a baby and throwing it in the dumpster. This movie may not be relatable to you or may not be your truth just like Tupac’s song, but it’s relatable to somebody and it’s their truth.”

About the Cinematographer
Reggie A Brown has always had a high interest in movies since he was a kid. He recalls some of his favorite childhood memories were when he would get to pick out and rent VHS movies from the movie rental store. He always found himself renting horror or ninja movies. Now in his adulthood he will often times go to the movie theater alone so he can become fully immerse into the films without any interruption from additional guest. He enjoyed movies so much that he quit his Logistics job in Memphis, TN and moved to Winter Park, FL where he started studying Sound for Film at Full Sail University. He always enjoyed the way the sound within the movies could tell its’ own story. With higher education making him study films more intensively, he became interested in other aspects of the movies as well, in particular the Lighting & Composition. This new interest made him go further down the rabbit hole of filmmaking, which lead him on the path of becoming a Cinematographer. Currently, Reggie has an uncounted amount of music videos, commercials, and short films on his list of accomplishments; as well as documentaries, interviews, and sports videos. He’s also shot 2 feature films in 2019; on the 1st he was B cam op and worked as A cam op as needed, and on the 2nd one he was the only Cinematographer on the project. Right now, main goal is to be the Cinematographer on a Lifetime Movie Network movie as well as shoot other independent feature films, long form docs, more short films, and TV commercials. Since covid19, AF•TER•BIRTH is his latest Short Film release.
