The story of Shashi is synonymous with millions of Indian women. Bound by the Indian take on feminism, they are never seen as individuals who speak up for themselves in popular culture and TV. Shashi in the movie, English Vinglish is the mother of 2 kids and a wife to a man, Ajit. She struggles to find validation from her family as she is regularly insulted by them for not knowing English. Knowing English is a social status in post-colonial India. Only about 5% of the population is fluent in English.

In this trailer, I aimed to shift the narrative of the trailer to that which is more genuine, more true. The original trailer is happy and joyful and undermines the struggles of the main character, Shashi. The movie is also filled with hyperbole and over sensationalised scenes of her interactions with Americans. Although true, these interactions portray how the makers of the movie have tried to pander to an international audience while covering a domestic issue. Doing this, they are also drawing away attention from the bigger issue at hand which is about how Shashi is insulted and judged at her own home by her own family due to which she looks for validation from outside.
