Budget cuts and growing layoffs in institutions such as museums and libraries resulting from the global pandemic have greatly reduced the already limited job opportunities that existed for A/V archivists. This panel will provide helpful tips for navigating what is a very difficult time to search for a new job. It will also act as part of a larger support network that AMIA is creating for its members and others in the field to meet and share their worries and successes. Panelists representing a range of perspectives from the media archiving field - students, employers, academic librarians, and remote workers - will share stories on how they are adapting to the new job market.

This recording is the first half of the event, consisting of short presentations from the panelists. The second half of the event was an open discussion and not recorded.

Discussion Participants:

Snowden Becker has a BFA in Printmaking from the Maryland Institute, College of Art, an MLIS from UCLA, and most (but not all) of a PhD in Information Studies from UT Austin.

Edward Benoit, III is Associate Director, Associate Professor and Russell B. Long Professor in the School of Library & Information Science at Louisiana State University.

George Blood graduated from the University of Chicago (1983) with a Bachelor of Arts in Music Theory. George Blood, L.P. was founded as Safe Sound Archive in 1992.

Claire Fox is a recent graduate from the Moving Image Archiving and Preservation (MIAP) program at New York University.

Ulrich Ruedel holds a doctorate in Analytical Chemistry from the University of Muenster, Germany and is now Professor of Conservation and Restoration at HTW – University of Applied Sciences, Berlin, to focus on teaching and researching the preservation of film, photos, video and related modern media.

Rachael Stoeltje’s role as Director of the Indiana University Libraries Moving Image Archive focuses on preservation and access for the vast Libraries’ film collections.
