“Women, as all of those who were never recognized by historiography, don’t have their stories registered. That influences the listing of statements about the present in the present, life stories, oral tradition, be it a reconstitution effort, as well as an attempt to give free course to our imagination and our creativity, to give us instruments to own the future. And because the liberation of each oppressed group goes through the appropriation of its own history, in search of their social identity, one more reason for this to be a book only with women, without being a book only about women or just for women.” - Auszug aus dem Buch “Erinnerungen (der Frauen) des Exils”
Mixing images of trips in Europe during the 1970s, “The history begins starting from us” visually reconstructs the experience of the exiled Brazilian women during the military dictatorship. The short film attempts to retrace the steps of the Brazilian diasporic communities created in Europe and invites the spectator into the world of an anonymous “we”. This is my story, your story, their story, but above all: our history. “The history begins starting from us” is a journey through the collective experience of persecution and exile of the Brazilian women that fled the military dictatorship. Only historical reconstruction enables us to understand and compare our past, in order to conceive new realities. But what happens to narratives that disappear due to totalitarian oppression? The short film was developed in partnership with the Austrian Filmmuseum and based on the book “Memories (from the women) from exile”.
