The film ‘Careful in the Future’ is rooted in time, emerging from a number of places and across years of moving around. Production-wise, we started with the phone-booth scene, the one that opens the story (back in episode one, posted on Sunday) from one of several New York shoots in 2018. If I remember correctly the first studio shoot — and by studio, I mean our New York apartment with a backdrop setup and a lighting kit cobbled together from a number of lamps around the place — was for “Go First,” which I happened to run all by myself as Karaugh was out of town. All the color is in-camera, thanks to LED lightbulbs. Me, a tripod and some wine, really. How stuff gets made.

The desert exterior shots were filmed about two years prior to the performance stuff, on a day in White Sands, New Mexico that seemed to stretch out in every direction forever, and we were in it and nobody knew anything about ‘Careful in the Future’ yet. We were just taking footage and photos and I made the little movie that tracks across the alabaster landscape to Karaugh on the ridge with the camera and that was that. And then it sat there in the files for all the intervening time, waiting for ‘Careful’ to need it. So it goes. The beach shots put us back in Montauk, November of 2018.
