Legendary film critic Pauline Kael lived at 2419 Oregon St in Berkeley from 1955-1964 before moving to New York and to The New Yorker magazine. Iconic Bay Artists Jess Collins and Harry Jacobus both adorned the house with fantastic murals which, remarkably, still exist today.
While much of Kael's reputation rests on her tenure at The New Yorker, it was her formative years amidst the California avant-garde (as evidenced by these murals), her presence as film reviewer on KPFA, and her role as curator of the seminal art house Cinema Guild on Telegraph Ave (along with her then-husband Ed Landberg) that made her a singular voice in the during the golden era of film criticism.
