For the past 5 years in a row I have entered the international Straight 8 competition which offers filmmakers a nearly impossible challenge; namely, to make a movie on one roll of Super 8 film with no editing, and to create a sound track for that movie without being able to see the film at all. Each year I think through what it is that I want to put on film, and then I shoot it twice. Without being able to see the film, I then choose one of the two rolls to ship to London to the film lab used by the competition. They send it on to the Straight 8 team where, over the course of several months, a jury chooses 8 films to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival and another 18 or so entries are selected to premiere at a later date in a London theater. Only after the premieres are over do the film files get sent to the filmmakers who, in most cases, will only then see their movies for the first time.

Of the two films I made in 2020, my "reject"--the one I decided not to enter in the competition--is available on my Vimeo channel. It's called "Obnoxious Interlude." This present film, named simply for my Straight 8 entry number (20200116) is the one I sent to the competition. So, please watch both of them and let me know if you think I made the right choice.
