The third prominent figure in the architectural scene invited to reflect on OASE 105 - Practices of Drawing - is Giovanna Borasi (1971, Milan, Italy).
Giovanna Borasi is a writer, an editor, a curator and currently holds the position of Director of the Canadian Centre for Architecture (CCA) in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Giovanna Borasi studied architecture at the Politecnico di Milano. She worked as Curator for Contemporary Architecture at CCA from 2005 to 2010, and in 2014 was named Chief Curator. Key to the signature of her exhibitions and publications, is the particular attention drawn to alternative ways of practicing and evaluating architecture, and the influence of social and political issues on urbanism and the built environment.
Her exhibition and publication projects include Imperfect Health: The Medicalization of Architecture (2011, with Mirko Zardini) The Other Architect / Another Way of Building Architecture (2016), Besides History: Go Hasegawa, Kersten Geers, and David Van Severen (2017), and Scripts for a new world. Film Storyboards by Alessandro Poli (2019).
After working as an editor for Lotus International (1998–2005) and Lotus Navigator (2000–2004), Borasi was appointed Deputy Editor in Chief of Abitare (2011–2013). She has also published widely in journals such as ARCH+, Domus, 2G, Cartha, Harvard Design Magazine, e-flux, and PLOT.
We at OASE are thrilled with her contribution as she reflects on the drawing as a liminal space between the idea and reality, the re-emergence of the photo-collage and the implications of the digital tools for the singular gesture.
OASE 105 – Practices of Drawing OASE 105 looks at architectural drawings as dynamic processes that shape architectural thinking. To give insight into the relation between the tools and techniques for drawing, and the resulting architectural production and construction, OASE 105 draws from case studies that range from early sections in antiquity, the experimentation with drawing techniques on medieval construction sites, the automatization of orthographic drawing in the early Renaissance, to the more specific cases of George Aitchison’s elevations, John Ruskin’s drawing lessons, Heinrich Tessenow’s perspectives, El Lissitzky’s axonometric drawings, Lina Bo Bardi’s surrealist tableau’s and Tony Fretton’s CAD drawings.
The OASE #105 editorial board consists of Asli Cicek, Bart Decroos, Jantje Engels and Véronique Patteeuw.
OASE can be purchased for € 19,95 at, amongst others, nai010 publishers (nai010.com) or NAi Booksellers (naibooksellers.nl).
