Sarah is an unhappy teenager. She feels put upon by her parents and resents having to babysit her brother but then has second thoughts when he disappears after she wishes him away. She then finds herself at the mercy of the goblin king who has put her under a spell and forced her to take part in a wager for the safe return of the baby brother she didn't realise that she loved.

The film revolves around 15-year-old Sarah's (Jennifer Connelly) quest to reach the center of an enormous otherworldly maze to rescue her infant brother Toby, who Sarah wished away to Jareth, the Goblin King (David Bowie). With the exception of Connelly and Bowie, most of the film's significant characters are played by puppets produced by Jim Henson's Creature Shop.
