Title: XÉNITEIA/XENITEIA (How We Live Together) - Teaser 2 (1 min 29 sec)

A short film by Anne Katrine Senstad created in collaboration with actor: Bill Sage and specific audio management by JG Thirlwell. Production year 2020-2021

XÉNITEIA/XENITEIA is the forth film in a series of four short films by Anne Katrine Senstad created during the pandemic of 2020-21 in collaboration with acclaimed actor Bill Sage and composer/producer JG Thirlwell on audio management. Each of the four short film chapters is built around the idea of a hybridized cinematic performative monologue reading format.

The internal monologues Sage invites us into, are extracted from French philosopher Roland Barthes 1977 university lecture series How To Live Together; a series of fantasmatic methods for the conditions for a utopic and societal tolerance under idiorrythmic living formats as a poetic, psychological and analytical worldview in an era of entropy, chaos and transformation - and how we find ourselves along the existential journey. Bill Sage embodies a depth and poetry of Barthes philosophical lectures and plays upon the very cords of the human instrument through his audio-visual performance.

Created over the span of a year during the pandemic, the films are real-time responses and an archive of the human experience of living through social-political crisis, perspectives on how quarantined life, societal isolation, displacement and loss of lives cloak humanity and the transformational evolution of time. In conclusion of Barthes 1977 lecture series on idiorrythmic living formats through novelistic simulations, XÉNITEIA/XENITEIA unfolds forms of exile, isolation and estrangement; as displacement from the mother/fatherland, as the departure from the past through ritual or action, or isolation within ones home – yet as a state of isolation and distance within oneself.

Barthes contemplates the state of isolation as one of freedom from the oppression the Other, authoritarian mechanism and the societal machine, while simultaneously in the utopic and tolerantly distanced living format, he sees the withdrawn condition to be an internal experience of struggle and a deep sadness for humanity desiring to confront our existence as together as community. Being among strangers is inevitable, necessary even, except when night falls.

Through Sage's narration we can absorb the essence of Barthes humanistic and existential vision as if in the theatrical setting or in a live performance. In contemplating the history of ethics and citizenry, states of isolation, disenfranchisement and marginalization of the individual, and the societal erosion taking place globally, the film series How We Live Together unfolds through the critical eye and visual poetry of the internal voice of Barthes philosophical language. Barthes texts draw lines through the history of religious monastic systems, and its anthropological and spiritual forensics to discover the agency of the human experience.

The series of films vary between 10-17 minutes long and present vignettes of stream of consciousness imagery, on the backdrop archival footage and documentary city shots, witnessing life through the pandemic in New York, one of the hardest hit cities in the world in the early stages of the pandemic in the spring of 2020, the societal upheaval during the US election year, and the societal, environmental, and humanitarian challenges we are continuing to experience in 2021.
