THE BOOK OF BIRDIE
FILM TITLE SEQUENCE ART
FEATURE | 2017 | Melancholy Star
Tools: Pen & Ink, Photoshop, Animation
Inspired by traditional etchings of Durer and classical religious imagery, this sequence hints at the youthful innocence of the film and winter setting with snowflakes and gives a nod to the theme of blood found throughout this fantasy feature film.
The effect of layering the drawings creates a paper cut-out effect, echoing the main character's penchant for crafts and comic books.
Technique: First I created the linework by hand with ink on paper, before I layered it up in Photoshop into one long piece of artwork that the camera could scroll up, with lots of layers to animate (like stars that could spin or drift, and blood to drip). The assembly was then comped, given motion and lit by the animator.
