Edmonton will be welcoming, as part of the 2019 SOUND OFF Festival, Songs My Mother Never Sung Me. The writer is Dave Clarke, a CODA [superimposed text: Child of Deaf Adults], who drew from his personal experiences to tell the story of a Deaf mother and hearing son told through a combination of ASL and English performed in an operatic style. This opera has been created for families, including kids ages 5 and up. It will be fully accessible in both languages. We also have a cool tactile technology for audience members to feel the piano, drums, and other music! You’ll feel everything and more!

The mother is performed by Canadian Deaf artist Elizabeth Morris, from Ontario, while the mother’s voice is Susan Gilmour, an internationally recognized singer-actress. The son is performed by Luc Tellier, a local Edmonton up-and-coming actor who has previously worked in ASL-interpreted productions. The narrator is Kieran Martin Murphy, a seasoned actor-musician who is challenging himself with this bilingual play. Many other talented individuals are part of this production and you can read all about them at the SOUND OFF website!

Diapers, cookies, ducks — motherhood, and childhood… In this play, you will witness many moments - jokes, mischief, teasing, bonding, and moments of frustration, confusion, anxiety, and struggle. But they stick together, and navigate the adventure of life.

Songs My Mother Never Sung Me will be performed at the Westbury Theatre within the ATB Financial Arts Barn. The performances go from February 13 to 17. To check showtimes and purchase tickets, please visit the website:
