A Justiça é associada a figuras femininas desde a antigüidade. A deusa egípcia Maat (cujo nome deu origem à palavra “magistrado”) muitas vezes era retratada com uma espada na mão. Na Grécia, o papel cabia a Têmis, que já trazia uma balança na mão direita. Em sua versão romana, batizada Justitia, a mesma deusa passa a trazer também a espada e a venda nos olhos.
