Play, download and edit the free video ZX Spectrum 50 Hz full-screen animation.

The pixel data for the ZX Spectrum screen takes 6144 bytes (256 × 192 at one bit per pixel). Although this seems like a small amount of memory, the 3.5 MHz Z80 CPU in the Spectrum takes between 4 and 23 cycles to execute an instruction (depending on the instruction). It can execute about 8750 “average” instructions per frame.

For example, the special LDIR memory-block-copy instruction requires 21 cycles per byte (except the last which is only 16 cycles), which requires almost 1/25 of a second.

Although not as impressive as demos from the ZX Spectrum demo scene, this video is my own code to rewrite the entire screen every 50Hz frame.
