EXTINCTION REBELLION FOLKESTONE & HYTHE (XR-FH)

Marking the first anniversary of the declaration of Climate Emergency

Extinction Rebellion (XR) is a national, and international organisation dedicated to radical non-violent direct action to raise awareness that climate change, resulting directly from excess human carbon emissions, will soon have catastrophic impacts.

Mass XR protests in London in April 2019 demanded that a state of national emergency be declared in response to this threat. Following this, Folkestone and Hythe District Council declared a Climate Emergency on 24 July 2019.

Marking the first anniversary of the Council’s declaration of Climate Emergency, members of Extinction Rebellion Folkestone and Hythe (XR-FH) have donated and planted a Greenspire, a small leafed lime tree, close to the entrance to the Civic Centre on Castle Hill Avenue, Folkestone.

XR-FH have also presented the Council with an end-of-year ’school’ report, marking the council’s work over the year.

A spokesperson for XR-FH said….

“Our gift of this tree is intended to remind the Council that their declaration of Climate Emergency must be more than just a token. The wellbeing of all our children and grandchildren depends on our taking urgent radical action to reduce carbon emissions into the atmosphere. The Council, ….We..., cannot play at this. They need to know that residents in the district are holding them to account for their progress.”

“One of the outcomes of the Covid-19 pandemic has been to show that in an emergency a number of things have to be done differently, and can be done differently. We are in a continuing Climate Emergency now! This needs to be clearly understood. We should not simply go back to where we were, but improve together for a sustainable, survivable future.”

The current UK national target for bringing carbon emissions down to net zero is 2050. Many across the UK contend this is far too late to avoid the worst effects of climate change; mass extinction of species; the widespread death of people through starvation, drought and severe weather events. The UK Committee on Climate Change 2020 Progress Report, published last month, shows that the UK Government is falling woefully short of meeting even the 2050 target.

Folkestone & Hythe District Council have committed to a shift to zero carbon by 2030, for its own activities and developments. The end-of-year report picks out areas where progress has been made and highlights areas where improvement is needed. It is open to all councillors to make their own assessment of what they have achieved, but in whatever form urgent progress across the board is essential. There are very few years to go.
